Step 1 — Acknowledging Our Limitations

We admitted we were powerless over people, places, and things — that our lives had become unmanageable.

Growth begins with honesty. Identify where control has failed you and where surrender may open a better path.

Purpose: To honestly identify areas where your attempts to control people, places, or things have failed and led to unmanageability.

Be specific. List situations (e.g., a specific relationship, work stress, a personal habit) where your efforts to control the outcome have been ineffective or made things worse. Look for common threads. Do these situations involve certain emotions (anger, fear), people, or times of day? Identifying patterns is key to awareness. Reflect on the toll. How has trying to control these things impacted your mental peace, physical health, relationships, or integrity? Write a simple, present-tense sentence to affirm letting go for today (e.g., "Today, I surrender my need to control my adult child's decisions.").
